nerd stamp!

You know you're a nerd when....someone is talking about 'eunuchs' and you hear 'UNIX'. I am so embarassed (in Grover from Sesame Street voice).

Happy Inauguration Day...

I enjoy humorous oddities as much as the next person:

reality bites

Revisiting an old classic. Cool-hair Winona, Grunge-Philosopher Ethan Hawke, Yuppie-Boyfriend Ben Stiller, Slutty-GapManager-Retro Jeneane Garofalo, Wienerschnitzel David Spade, Bit-Part Renee Zellweger, LisaLoebyMusicGoodness and a quality cameo from the dad from Frasier. Plus my friend Sara is right. This movie was funny at 14, scary at 24.

the ghost of funny things past

Isn't it great when someone reminds you of a hilarious thing you had forgotten? For instance, today I was at the grocery store with my friend Ghenette and I said something about not embarassing her in the store. She replied that after the singing incident, nothing should embarass me in a store. I had forgotten the time she and I had been shopping for a stapler in, well, in Staples, and 'Run to You' came on the radio. Then we kind of started singing it, kind of loud. Then the guy who had gone to check on staplers for us came back and we both immediately stopped singing and were all straight-faced as though we hadn't been jammin' to the 80s in a store aisle. But he knew we had. And we knew he knew. So then we ran away from Staples and laughed for about an hour. It was great.

the art world

Four year old prodigy Marla Olmstead- check out her stuff, not too shabby...www.marlaolmstead.com. Some art snob from Cornell said that her work lacks 'spiritual and cultural sophistication'. Hello? She's four, she only knows her parents! People can be strange. But I guess if you're going to sell a kid's paintings for $15 000 there are gonna be critics.

em gets (more) political

Watching the West Wing makes me read the news. Reading the news makes me think about issues. Thinking about issues makes me write emails to the prime minister (like this one).

Dear Mr. Martin,

I was concerned to read that Paul Cellucci
(Canadian ambassador to the US)is of the opinion that
Canada is in favour of the American ballistic missile defense plan. As a
Canadian citizen, I would vehemently oppose lending support to this
project in any way. Supporting a plan like missile defense only
diminishes Canada's reputation as a country that cares about and
actively works for peace. If we are to truly be world leaders in
peace-building, it is essential that we do not endorse instruments of
war.

I hope that you will consider that many Canadians share my position
and carefully evaluate the international implications of Canada
adopting American military policy.

Thank you.

American Foreign Policy

It seems that foreign policy of the United States of America has changed little since this speech was made by President Polk in 1846:

"But now, after reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.... As war exists, notwithstanding all our efforts to avoid it, exists by the act of Mexico herself, we are called upon by every consideration of duty and patriotism to vindicate with decision the honor, the rights, and the interests of our country."

Insert "terrorists" where it says "Mexico" and we have little change in 150-odd years.

Year In Review
(with a tip of the hat to D.Pee Carey)

Jobs: House of Friendship (nuts) Elections Canada (many, many people should have their voting priveledges revoked) OMC (good fun, and turns out I actually like doing sermons. I'm thinking of becoming a political speech-writer. Or maybe I should just watch less West Wing)
Locations: Montreal (cold, then fun), Grimsby (home), Hawaii (I'm seriously looking at moving there, Hawaii Pacific U. here I come!), Waterloo (loverly friends), Ottawa (new home, not too shabby), Cairo (crazy traffic. there are no words.) Also a random foray or two to Quebec City, NYC and other cities of fun. In one crazy 32-hour day I was actually in Ottawa, Montreal, New York, Paris and Cairo.
Events: Bronwyn got married. Likely upcoming quad marriages= 0. My last living grandparent, Dad's mom, passed away.
Hobbies: I seem to have abandoned the concept. The time has come for more crocheting!
Reading: Enjoying the non-fiction world right now. People's History of the U.S., Shake Hands With the Devil, Future: Tense. Also 'Teen Idol' by Meg Cabot.
Television: Passed on the Buffy legacy to cousin Andrea. Took up new shows, Sex and the City, West Wing, American Idol (one at a time, I can't rush into tv)next up: Alias.
Happy New Year!
